Maternity Fashion Donts
Sooner is not always better. We know that it may not be the thing you expect from a maternity fashion house, but we dont recommend you getting into maternity styles until you feel like you need to. If your clothes fit fine, dont be tempted by maternity. Trust us, there will be a time when you will wish that you could go back to wearing your normal clothes, not maternity. Start slow, first introduce good comfortable under-belly pants that will accommodate your growing bump. Invest into stretchy tanks and camis that will cover your lower belly when your regular tops start riding up. Then, when you approach 2nd trimester (for most women during first pregnancy, this is where they will need to get into maternity clothing). Gradually buying maternity clothes will let you buy things you genuinely like, rather than having to buy everything all at once. You will save yourself the frustration of having to buy things you are not in love with, but must buy because you have nothing to wear. This will also be easier on your budget, as you wont have to spend hundreds of dollars all at once!
Size
Dont be tempted to buy things that are not a perfect fit. If the shirt is too big, you will look frumpy in it. If the pants dont fit quite right, chances are, they never will. Opt for styles that are stretchable and able to move with you and accommodate your changing body. Hem your pants or have things taken in if something you love doesnt quite fit right; you will thank yourself later, as it will give you the polished look that will make you feel great about yourself.
Price
Dont think that expensive is always better. Some of our favorite maternity pieces came from very basic lines. Experiences with some high-end lines have yielded poor quality clothes at times. Go for the maternity clothing that feels good and is flattering, save on basic pieces, splurge on accent pieces and staples (like jeans). Buy things in-between, but keep in mind that maternity clothes is for a short period of time. Be versatile and open-minded, sometimes you find the cutest things in the most unexpected places! Have your own unique maternity style and have fun with mixing it up!
Fabric
Dont get things that have to be ironed or dry-cleaned, unless you absolutely have to! Save yourself the trip to the drycleaners and take the extra time with your feet up instead of in front of the ironing board! Select stretchable fabrics that let your skin breathe and eco-friendly fabrics that make you feel good about your purchase.
Buttons, ties, buckles
This may be a no-brainer to some, but some maternity outfits are so complex that you need another person to help you get into our of it! The last thing you want to be doing is struggling in putting clothes on, and frustrated in taking it off. Watch out for adjustable straps and ties in uncomfortable places. Simple is better! If you try on a maternity top and are struggling in the fitting room, chances are, you will at home too. Unless it a gown for your sisters wedding and you must wear it, opt for simple styles that flatter you, not complicate your life.
